Covers

If you would like to purchase a print, a photo for a book cover, or get permission to use my images for any reason please contact me. My images are copyrighted and all rights reserved. In addition to the photos on my blog, you can see a few of my photos at Viewbug or Flickr and Instagram. I do plan to simplify my photos into a portfolio. The covers that I have designed should all be linked to the authors' works. Give their books a read (and review).

On my blog, I talk about the "making of" some of the covers and photo sliders I've designed, I also re-design covers and talk about books I'm reading.

“We did our own cover for the first two books in our Appalachian Journey series, Whistling Woman and Moonfixer, but after they became best-sellers on Amazon, we decided we needed to go with a professional for the third, Beloved Woman. And boy, are we glad we did. Kim’s cover for Beloved Woman is gorgeous and she did so much more than we expected. From the series logo (which was her idea) to the layout of the front and back to the square cover required for the audio book, everything she did is beautiful and perfectly reflects the theme and setting of the books.. All we had to do was share some pictures of our main character with her and she came up with the idea for the cover, designed it and even gave us options (which we shared with our readers on our blog and Facebook page and let them vote for the one they liked best). When the choice was made, she sent us several pictures of the cover as an e-book and the full flat for the print version, and she included a logo for our publishing company, Spring Creek Press.

We can’t say enough good things about her design and the ease of working with her. She made this book a true joy for us and if you’ve ever struggled to do the many variations of a cover for a book, you’ll understand what we’re talking about. We recommend her highly and you can be sure we’ll use her for any future books in the series!”

These two full flat covers are from my own two books.  A spot color gloss cover for the hardcover and a matte full color for the abridged paperback edition. My latest book, You Had Me at Meow; Considerations before Adopting your Cat. is available as an ebook and paperback.

CC Tillery’s first book in Brown Mountain Lights series, is Through the Brown Mountain Lights.  This was challenging because the storyline covers time travel, the old south of the past, and the late 60’s, plus the mystery of the lights, healers, war, friendship, and romance. The cover photo was a custom shoot of Brown Mountain in Morganton NC. As you can see they really kept to a theme on this series, using the same one photo of the mountain. I can do this or make each cover completely unique.

Their second book in Brown Mountain Lights series, is Seeking the Brown Mountain Lights. I used the same photo with extensive editing. I added the pinecone image and used the same series logo that was made from the first book in the series.

Third in the series is Into The Brown Mountain Lights, I edited the original photos and added the custom Joe Pye weed photo.

The authors know all the editions  (full flat, ebook, audiobook) they will need and order them at one time. They start with the ebook cover and follow with the full flat print book, audiobook, and social media covers at a later time.  Read more about the making of the covers for the Brown Mountain Light series here.

CC  Tillery’s first book in the Appalachian Journey series,  was Whistling Woman. I had the requirement to make it as close to the original (at your right) but still new and fitting to the series theme. It is a full flat for print, front covers for an ebook and an audiobook. The front cover was a custom shoot and I used the same photo for the back cover background. I took a the photo of John Tillery’s apple painting and made the best seller sticker. I had the publisher imprint logo, and series brand mark logo from designing the previous two in the series. I remade the social media banner for Facebook. Read more about the making of Whistling Woman here.

After I finished Beloved Woman the authors hired me to redesign the cover for MoonFixer that they had made. See the photo to the right.

It is a full flat for print, cover for an ebook and an audiobook. With the photo of the house painting by John Tillery provided. The moon is a photo I had already shot. The front cover was a custom shoot. I had the publisher imprint logo, and series brand mark logo from Beloved Woman. I remade the social media banner for Facebook with the new book added. Read more about the making of Moonfixer here.

This project was for CC  Tillery’s third book in the Appalachian Journey series, Beloved Woman.  It is a full flat for print, cover for an ebook and audiobook. With two images, and one painting provided, and two photos I took on the back cover of Queen Anne’s Lace and the painting by John Tillery, along with a texture,  publisher imprint logo, series brand mark logo, two 3D images and social media banners for Facebook and Google+.  Read more about the making of Beloved Woman here.

Wise Woman, is the 4th and final book in the Appalachian Journey series by CC Tillery. It is a full flat for print, cover for an ebook and audiobook. With two images I shot for this cover (the image on the front and another of the feathers on the back, plus the one of John Tillery’s painting on the back cover.  I had the publisher imprint logo, and series brand mark logo from Beloved Woman. I remade the social media banner for Facebook and reworked their business cards. Read more about the making of Wise Woman here.

On this series, we kept the same logo, type and style but each cover was still custom for each book based in each storyline.

These two cover mock-up full flats are for a friend and local author. Unwilling Angel is a re-design of an existing book.  The series is not in print at this time as the author concentrates on another series.  Both have 3 images not including the author-supplied photo. I did not design the original.

This cover illustration is for author Bill Ramsey.
I was hired for the front cover image and design. After the consignment had been completed there was a change to the title. Because the change came after the design was finished, they ended up using my photo and concept idea by keeping similar text and colors.

I took the photo, “Light Swirls” and edited in the colors for the cover illustration.

This cover was designed for the late Chuck Werle. It underwent several revisions with cover changes, spine width changes and title changes.  Ultimately he chose to use a Create Space cover with a photo of himself on the cover.

Here are two designs I submitted for the 2015 CFA Yearbook contest. I based my color choice on the fact that they plan to go back to  orange and purple color theme and trading cards.

This family cookbook I made was not for widespread publication. I know it’s not really a book cover per say especially since there is no author name but I created the  cover  specifically for this use.  From gathering family items to the table, cookbooks and flower choice.

I have been making personal photo books for years from vacations and trips we’ve taken but this was the first effort that family would be purchasing the end product.

These clay creations with personality were created by Jean Greeson. I couldn't help but think they would make wonderful book characters. She may also be offering custom designs.

I hear her husband Donald is a wonderful illustrator. I know several of my author friends who inquired about having illustrations for books- and he came to mind.

I took the photo, “Light Swirls” and edited in the colors for the cover illustration for the cover of Bill Ramsey's book.
